Java These coffees are brighter and cleaner (wet processed) than the Sumatra with rich flavor and medium body. Altitude: between 1500 and 2000 meters History The Unwashed Java Arabica is a low grade coffee and basically badly kept and processed by the farmers and hardly worth mentioning. The washed Arabica’s on the other hand are something special. The Washed Arabica’s are grown in the eastern part of Java on the state plantations PTP 12 named, Jampit, Belawan, Pancur, Kayumas. There is a fifth called Gunung Blau but this is in our opinion not of the same standard as the others. The Jampit estate is the biggest with a yearly production of some 67,000 (60 kg) bags. On all the plantations the processing is introduced from Central America and done in the same way. As the plantations are state owned they are fairly sophisticated and well maintained as well as the factories. Yield per Hectare can reach 2 tons. The qualities are called W.I.B. small, medium or large bean but all grade 1’s. The W.I.B. stands for ‘West Indische Bereiding’ being Dutch for West Indonesian Preparation. The Dutch influence is still found in the 1902 build Administrators House on the Belawan estate build with bamboo walls.
